Respite Care Program

At Bright Source Hospice, we recognize that caregiving is an act of love—but it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting. Our Respite Care Program provides short-term relief for family caregivers by temporarily transferring the care of their loved one to trained professionals. This break allows caregivers to rest, attend to personal needs, or simply recharge, knowing their loved one is in safe and compassionate hands. Caring for yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

Temporary Inpatient Care

  • Up to 5 consecutive days of care in a Medicare-approved facility

  • 24/7 supervision by hospice-trained nurses and staff

  • Pain management, symptom control, meals, hygiene support, and comfort measures

  • Continued coordination with the hospice medical team to maintain continuity of care

Caregiver Relief at Home

  • For some families, respite may be provided in the home by hospice aides

  • Offers relief for several hours a day over short periods (as resources allow)

  • Designed for caregivers who need a temporary break without relocating the patient

Transportation Coordination

  • Assistance with arranging transportation to and from the respite care facility

  • Communication between Bright Source Hospice, the facility, and the family at all times

Support for Families During Respite

  • Check-ins from social workers or chaplains if emotional or spiritual support is needed

  • Guidance on making the most of your respite time without guilt or worry

  • Counseling for caregiver burnout, grief, and stress management

Who Is Eligible?

Respite care is available to any patient under our hospice care whose primary caregiver needs short-term relief. This benefit is especially helpful for:

  • Caregivers managing care 24/7 without additional support

  • Family members experiencing burnout, illness, or emotional overwhelm

  • Situations where travel, important events, or emergencies arise

Medicare and Medi-Cal typically cover 100% of respite care services for eligible hospice patients.
